About Morag
My work aims to be both decorative and functional, drawing influences from mythological and primitive art.
Using hand-building techniques, earthenware plates and pots are then painted in coloured slips and oxides, all unique pieces.
I also make smoke-fired and raku sculptural work.
After a BA in History of Art at the University of Sussex, I worked in Salisbury Museum re-organising the display of the Pitt Rivers collection. I then went into education and my first job inspired my love of working with clay and I continued teaching for more than 20 years.
Spain has always been a big influence in my life. I grew up in Gibraltar and later renovated a property in Andalucia, building a pottery studio with all-round views of the mountains. This wildness and landscape inspired a lot of work and I also had the opportunity to show in several Spanish galleries.
Currently based in Bristol, I continue to produce a wide variety of work for exhibitions and also for commissions.
I still regularly visit Spain and my most recent work explores the symbolism of the bull, reflecting the diverse ways humans have interacted with this powerful creature throughout history and across cultures.
I hope you can share my enthusiasm for clay and enjoy the quirky sense of humour in my artwork.
